McNeal: Living Room Project

McNeal: Living Room Project

What a change! I am so happy that my parents allowed me to redo their living on a budget. For over 15 years the living room had the early 2000s Mediterranean feel with the dominant color being brown. Everything was brown and wood finish. We had to update it so that my mom could see the full potential of her home for the future. Here is are the key things we did to completely revamp this space.

The Before, extremely dark and brown. We need to move past the Mediterranean 2000s trend.

2. Go bright - Like I mentioned earlier my dad’s recliner is chocolate brown and my parent’s floors is a redwood vinyl which honestly I love. However with so much brown in their home and in their previous choice of furniture, it was time to do the opposite. Go bright! My parents were not keen to it at first. But I talked them into whites, creams, ivorys, blues, yellows and more. Their sofa is a beautiful performance fabric off white color. It just changed the entire feel of the room.

    1. Blue rug - I chose an ivory cream rug with hints of blue in it to tie in the blue accents in the pillows we chose for the sofa. The blue really worked with the grey color walls they already had within the space.
    2. Home accessories - We went for beautiful simple vases and decor pieces that would blend in well when my mom decorates for the holidays. Its best to go neutral.

3. Cool lighting - Within the space my parents have beautiful exposed beams that are the highlight of the house. Therefore there was never any recessed lighting or just beautiful light fixtures etc. So we decided to purchase 2 nice floor lamps that gave off two different feels for the room.

4. Less is more - My mom wanted to keep the tv console they had. Again this pieces was a dark wood finish, so the idea was to add light color decor pieces on it and not fill it up. Before they had tons of dvds out and so many decor vases that it was chaotic. We focused on some of their beautiful coffee books, vases and their vintage vinyl record player.

5. Catch the eye - Within this room they have a massive wall with studio lighting but here was nothing to show on it honestly. My parents loved my vinyl record wall in my house and wanted to replicate that. So we did and it turned out amazing. All the stunning vinyls are the wall brought color and we used white picture ledges to keep the room consistent with the rug and sofa. Its such a great conversational piece and my parents just adore it.

6. Make your eye go up - another major win was removing the outdated curtain ruffle. I hate those! We removed those which were extremely dark and heavy, and replaced with simple sheer long curtains. We also took the rod and took it all the way to touching the beams. It makes your eye go up and it made the room look even bigger.

Check out the before & after when we raised the curtain rod and added sheer curtains.

Nespresso Affogato Coffee

Nespresso Affogato Coffee

I found my newest favorite drink, Nespresso Affogato Coffee with a Twist. I am obsessed with it right now.

There are affiliate links used within this post

All recipes that I make are with my Nespresso Machine. But of course you can use any coffee maker!

If you want to have a refreshing coffee after a dinner party or a coffee by the pool, this is the drink for you. Ice Leggero pod has a citrusy taste to it so it pairs well with sorbet. This drink has a semi-citrus and bitter taste which I just love. Nespresso calls this drink Nespresso Affogato Coffee with Sorbet.

Ingredients:

  • 1 Iced Leggaro Double Espresso pod 2.7oz
  • 2 1/2 scoops of Lemon Sorbet (I prefer sorbet since there is no dairy in it)

Supplies/Equipment:

  • Nespresso VertuoLine Machine
  • Spoon

Instructions:

  • Take a 5oz glass
  • Scoop the lemon sorbet into the glass
  • Take capsule and brew coffee over glass of sorbet
  • After take a spoon and gently stir the crema at the top of the glass to create a even more creamy coffee
  • And enjoy!

Interior Design Pay

Interior Design Pay

It’s been so fun being in school but challenging at the same time.

My recent lesson involved interior design pay. Yes, the sensitive subject of payment and compensation. That is such a sensitive and uncomfortable subject for many and I understand why. But here are the 4 ways that interior design pay works. Some are better than others and it all depends on the situation and where you are in your career.

  1. Paid by the hour
  2. Pay a flat rate
  3. Commission on each item purchased
  4. Combination

Let’s explore each:

  1. Pay by the hour - This involves being paid per hour based on a hourly rate for your services. Sounds like a good idea but there are some cons and there are certain timeframes where this would work.
    1. Cons - If you are starting out and charging $30 an hour, a client may find that expensive and also may not understand why they need you you so much. Remember we aren’t lawyers who charge $150 an hour for their services.
    2. Con #2 - How do you calculate per hour? If you are shopping for a client and find something else for another client, how do you split the time?
    3. Con #3 - The client can’t see the work. If you are working on plans or a visible presentation, the client has no idea how many hours it took. They might not accept that it took 6 hours etc to put your proposal together. So hourly is not ideal.
    4. When to use - Use this method when you are physically decorating and putting a room or space together. Meaning when all the pieces have arrived and you are going in there to set up the home or space. How many hours it takes to put together is when a hourly rate would make sense.
  2. Pay a flat rate - So you decided to charge a flat rate for your services and lets say that is $2,000. Seems like a lot right? Well it may not be.
    1. Con #1 - A flat rate means that the client can change anything and use you for as many hours as they please. You may be changing something or spending ample time with them unlimited.
    2. Con #2 - Could take away from a another client. If you have a client who wants additional time and they paid you a flat rate, that could take away from you booking another job till you are 100% complete with them.
    3. When to use - Use the flat rate for your proposal and for your first set of meetings possibly. Of course have the meetings timed to an hour or so. Here’s the thing, if a potential client wants you to present to them your ideas you can of course have a 30 minutes free consultation to start off. But if they want you to do a actual visual to see your idea come to life, the flat rate should be used. This is important especially if the client does not go with you. You don’t want to create this amazing presentation and they take it and go with somewhere else. If they do, at least you got paid.

  1. Commission - Honestly its one of the best concepts. If you charge 25% on every item you purchase or pick out for your client’s space this will help to make you feel like you are doing everything for a reason. And your client will see that as a better deal.
    1. Pro #1 - Also when you become a interior designer or decorator it is great to be part of a trade program or two. Trade programs will give you discounts on certain company’s furniture. So if you have this and then charge 25%, your client will feel they are receiving a great rate due to the discount in the first place and even if you add on the 25% they will not see the difference because regardless they are getting a deal.
    2. Con #1 - If you are decorating a space and doing just a nursery you may not make that much money off the job. Also, it comes down to the client’s budget as well.
    3. When to use - Use this method when you are purchasing the furniture only.
  1. Combination - Honestly the best concept out there for this field. You have to combine all 3 above to have a profitable business. Here are my suggestive steps:
    1. Offer a free 20 min meet & greet/consultation
    2. Charge a flat rate to create visual design (no more than 3 options) to your client to see and make a decision. (This will ensure that you have a client who is serious in hiring you)
    3. If they take you on, then you write up a contract and offer different services:
      1. Consulting - Charge by the hour for this service. This means getting paid by the hour for any physical work onsite that you are doing as well as phone calls or syncs.
      2. Shopping and ordering pieces - Use the commission method. Every item that you purchase or pick out should be a 25% or more of commission.
      3. Renderings - This is when a architect is involved and is building the actual design with exact measurements etc. This should be a flat rate. Till the client agrees on hiring, renderings should not be done yet.

I hope this was helpful if you are pursuing a career in interior design or interior decorating. Interior design pay is the key to making sure you stay successful for the talents that you will be showcasing to your future clients.

2023 Home Trends

2023 Home Trends

It's time to share my favorite 2023 home trends. At times I am nervous to discuss 2023 home trends because at times they come and go. However, there are trends that will last or evolve with time and I am excited to share what 2023 home trends will bring. Here are my favorites:

Moody rooms/dramatic spaces are here to stay

I adore the feel of a moody room with dark color palette. I feel that it is here to stay for a bit. If you are afraid to go dark or moody try it in the powder room first. Your powder room is the one spot where you can go crazy and not have to match the rest of the house.

Texture continues to dominate

I love when a space has texture somehow to make the room or furniture piece stand out. Texture gives things dimension and character. I love my blue teddy chair in our family room very much. That room has a white, beige, black and ivory color story. And from keeping the room from looking flat, my blue textured chair just brought the room together. So try adding texture with blankets, pillows, wallpaper, and small decor pieces if possible.

Total Nuetral home is not out, but it’s fading a bit

I was never a huge fan of the pure white or nuetral home. I found it extremely flat and boring. I love color and I feel color can set moods and excitement in a home anytime. I have exposed beams in our home and alot of white walls. I felt that I needed to have an accent wall to break up all the white. So we went with a beautiful teal blue accent to bring the room together. Enjoy color!

Art Deco is here!

I love art deco, especially since I live in Miami, FL. I always think about visual art, architecture with focus on geometric forms and luxury fabrics like velvet. I adore my Britto artwork and my green velvet couch. They are the pieces that set the tone for the room always. For art deco, go for key geomatric shapes in furniture, light fixtures etc.

Organization is still here

People love to feel organized in their homes and workspace. It is a ongoing trend that is not going to die. Everyone is a fan of the Home Edit IG account right? About 4 months ago I purchased the Home Edit kitchen organizer, and it has changed my life. Check out my Instagram Reel or Pinterest Idea Pin on it. And shop the post HERE.

Ultra white kitchen is fading

People want color again and personality in the kitchen. My kitchen is still a zen feel but to add more excitement I have wallpaper in my open pantry and I love the textured black tile on my peninsula. I am also a fan of kitchen island being a different  color than the rest of the cabinets.

Entryway Refresh

Entryway Refresh

I was ready to have a entryway refresh in this space to be more functional and modern

I had to do it. I had to do an entryway refresh and make it a bit more functional. We have a lot of guests that come and stay with us at times and one of my biggest pet peeves is leaving shoes at the front door. It isn’t their fault AT ALL. I appreciate that they remove their shoes before walking into the home, but then there is no real place to put them if we have 3 or more people visiting at once.

We do have a mud room for our shoes, our work bags and leashes etc for the dog but when we have a lot at once it can become messy since it is at the entrance of the house. So we got smart and finally put together a entryway with style.

I still wanted it to be clean, and give our home a great impression when people visit. Here’s my tips on a great entryway:

  1. Nice Storage - When guests come and remove their shoes, give them a nice container to put their shoes in. I went for a black cloth basket vs a regular straw one. I like neutral but really love black accents recently.
  2. No need to have two of everything - I refused to get 2 ottomans or two baskets, as long as there is balance we can make it work.
  3. Need high and lows regardless - Remember to bring height so everything is not on the same level. I bought faux branches to give height to my entry table and added coffee books to elevate some of our vases.
  4. Keep a color story - I went for a wood, black, white and grey feel to the my entryway. I also made sure the coffee table books went with the color story too.
  5. Ensure entryway is wider than your mirror or picture on the wall - To develop balance to the eye, your table should be wider than what you hang on the wall.
  6. Have a bowl or container - I did this because this is a great way to store keys! Both my husband and I at times misplace our keys and now its easier to find them and put them away with the bowl being confidently placed at the front door. Less stress now!

We love our entryway so much.
